Hello everybody,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Roslan and I'm from Malaysia. Despite my profile pic, I'm a male.

I have been programming for more than 30 years when I took the course "CS101 Introduction to FORTRAN Programming" (you can guess my age bracket,  Smiley). For the last 10 years my primary language is Java. I've been involved in large scale enterprise applications.

My dream has always been to write a 3D game in Java. After struggling with jME for a few months, I thought I would give Xith3D a go. I find that the API is cleaner and it has a working built-in HUD implementation which is easy to use.

What I'm working on is a remake of Master of Orion (the original game) in 3D. I know it's a very old game and not very exciting but the fun is in the programming and not the playing. The look and feel should be similar to the Civilization IV mod Final Frontier.

Regards,

Roslan.

That sounds reallyy interesting. I always was a fan of these games. I loved Ascendency and it was a shame, that they never released a successor. I also loved Master of Orion (part 2, never played part 1). Both these games had some weaknesses. And was always my plan to write a game, that combines the advantages of these two games and wipes out the weaknesses. Actually I was up to writing that when I got into conteact with the xith3d project the first time. Then I "got stuck" improving the engine itself and finally took the lead of the project.

I would love to help you with your game, if you want. Though my time is limited.

Thanks for the offer but I'm in exploratory mode at this moment. I'm sure when in the future I will take up your offer.

What I'm wondering is am I legally allowed to use the alien race names such intellectual properties of the original games in my game or I have to rename everything.

Sure.

I really can't imagine, that all the technological names are protected or even can be. I would rename the major races. There are not that many of then as far as MOO. But that shouldn't be necessary. I would not use the name "Master of Orion" or "Ascendency" anywhere in the game. But who cares. Both these games are abandonware Smiley.
